Harvesting keywords from your search terms.

You have converting search terms and want them promoted into their own keywords at a sensible bid, as a bulk file you can check line by line.

What the file contains.

The optimistic half of the Search Term Report, and the half most sellers skip because the wasted-spend half is more alarming. Terms discovered by automatic and broad campaigns that convert well enough to deserve deliberate bidding rather than whatever a loose match decided.

A harvest candidate is a search term with enough clicks to be credible, a conversion rate at or above the account's, and an ACOS under break-even. Promoting it into exact match gives you a bid you control, and usually a lower cost per click than the broad targeting was paying for the same query.

The step people forget is the other half of the trade: once a term is running in exact match, it should be negated in the campaign that discovered it, or the two compete against each other for the same query and you pay the higher of the two bids.

What it can tell you.

  • Which discovered search terms are worth their own exact-match targeting
  • What evidence supports each promotion — clicks, orders, conversion, ACOS
  • Which terms to negate in the source campaign after promoting them

Where reading it goes wrong.

  1. 01

Promoting a term without negating it in the source campaign

The auto or broad campaign keeps matching the same query. Two of your own campaigns then bid against each other and you pay more for traffic you were already winning.

  2. 02

    Harvesting on orders alone

Three orders from ninety clicks is not a winner, it is an expensive coincidence. Conversion rate against the account average is the test, not the raw order count.
